Advice for head injury patient caregiver

In a mild head injury situation the patient may be allowed to rest at home but continuous, close observation is required for another 24-48 hrs.

Rules to live by

  1. Put a responsible person in charge of watching the patient.
  2. Wake the patient every 1 to 2 hours for assessment
  3. If a mild headache is present, administer only medicines from hospital
  4. Only when there is no vomiting or nausea, allow intake of soft drinks.
  5. No alcohol or other drugs are to be ingested, no exercise or play is allowed.
Warning signs to IMMEDIATELY return the Patient to the Doctor .
  • Lack of consciousness : difficult to wake up, confused, agitated, etc.
  • Severe nausea or vomiting or vertigo (dizziness)
  • Severe progressive headache or prolonged headache with no improvement.
  • Weakness in extremities or convulsion.
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Water or mixed blood coming out from ears, nose, or draining down the throat
  • High fever
